Aki Tsugawa

For a long time during her 20’s, Aki suffered from a herniated disk in her lower back due to her profession as a hair stylist, where she spent many hours standing. As part of her rehabilitation she began attending a gym and had the good fortune to discover yoga there and started a regular practice. As a result her back healed and she recovered enough to be able to have a normal daily life.

In 2007, she discovered Ashtanga yoga for the first time, and was instantly absorbed by it.
In 2009, she first visited the source of Ashtanga yoga, KPJAYI (Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute), Mysore, India, to deepen her yoga practice with R. Sharath Jois (the grandson of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois).

After returning to Tokyo from India, Aki undertook daily practice with Tarik Thami and was invited to assist him. Later she traveled to London to study English where she practiced with Hamish Hendry in London and had the opportunity to assist him learning much in the process, which is she is very grateful for.

She continued to visit India annually to study at KPJAYI with R. Sharath Jois who granted her Level 2 Authorisation.
She is dedicated to the tradition and parampara (lineage) of Ashtanga yoga and enjoys sharing the practice and its therapeutic benefits with others.
